For Your Information

Library Access
As part of the Library Services network of Saint Thomas Health, the Julius Jacobs Health Sciences Library is here to support the educational, clinical, research and administrative activities of the hospital.  Our main purpose is to assist hospital personnel, Saint Thomas Health medical staff, and other affiliated programs with their information needs by providing access to evidence-based information sources.  We participate in several outreach projects to push medical information out to underserved populations and our doors are always open to any member of the community needing health care information.

Location
The library is located on the first floor off the main hallway of the hospital, just past the sky bridge from Seton Garage. Look for overhead signage to help direct you to the library.

Our Services
The library’s main goal is to provide timely and convenient access to the needed information in advancing the improvement of healthcare outcomes and patient care.  We do this in several ways with many types of resources.   Our collection consists of thousands of books and journals in print and electronic formats, a variety of electronic databases, audiovisual materials, and anatomical models and charts.  You can locate any item in our collection by searching the online catalog.   Our in-house materials circulate for two weeks with renewals upon an “as needed” basis. We have a number of computers, study space, and a small conference room for patron use.  There is absolutely no charge for any of our services to our affiliated users but we do ask that you adhere to copyright guidelines and a sense of stewardship when printing or copying materials.   Click here for more information on copyright.

Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery
If there is something you need that is not currently available in our collection we will try to borrow it from another library. There are three levels of borrowing for journal articles.

•    Normal—1 week
•    Rush—within 24 hours
•    Urgent Patient Care—within 8 hours

As a service to our users we will deliver documents to you via email, mail, or fax.  Just click on Request an Article at the top of the page to submit the needed information.  Specifying your need by date and your preferred method of delivery will help expedite the process.  To see if we own the full-text content of a journal article click here.  If you use PubMed as your primary search engine please consider registering for our Loansome Doc service.

Books and other materials that cannot be delivered electronically can take up to two weeks to arrive.   You can also submit a suggested purchase recommendation. If the request is feasible and would be value-added we may be able to add it to the collection.

Literature Searches
Resources for literature searching include PubMed, Ovid Medline and Cinahl, Cochrane Library, Health Reference Center, Dynamed and UpToDate.  Searches can be performed directly using one of the available patron computers, or it may be done for you by a member of the library staff.  If you are off campus you can also access most of these resources via ATHENS.  If you are in the hospital, click here to register for remote access.  If you are off campus please call the library and we will register you. When requesting a literature search it is important that you include specifics, especially the timeframe in which you need the results.   Please be aware that search retrieval is often improved when done by a trained individual with knowledge of the specific resource.   We are happy to assist you in developing your search strategies as well as helping to locate the most appropriate resources to get the best results. To request a mediated literature search, click here.

Computer Access
The library has nine work stations available for patron use.   The computers are equipped with up-to-date software and printing options and are internet accessible.   You must bring a CD/DVD or flash drive to save your work.  We ask that you do not download applications or save your work directly to the computers, keep personal usage to a minimum, and be aware of the Saint Thomas Internet usage policy.   The library is also a wi-fi hot spot for those who may want to use their own computers.   Click here for instructions on how to connect to our public wireless network.
